What a six-year-old is working on
Adding and taking away inside twenty, which will be the range for a year and is worth every minute spent on it. First real reading, where the letters have stopped being the problem and the meaning starts to be. And the clock, which is the first measurement a child meets that is not a number of things.
The year planning becomes possible
Six is roughly when a child can decide a whole sequence before seeing any of it happen. That is why the robot maze is on this page and not the last one: building the entire program and only then pressing Run is a genuinely different act from moving one step at a time, and a five-year-old usually cannot do it.
The keyboard
Finding the letters matters more than the correct fingers, and it matters now. A child who has to hunt for every key cannot write anything longer than a word, and the hunting โ not the spelling โ is what stops them. Touch typing is a separate job for later.
