Whiteboard Mode: the Games on a Class Screen

Every game on one screen at the front of the room. Bigger type, a wider layout, nothing to sign up for, and one link that turns it on.

A projector or an interactive whiteboard is a different device from a tablet in a lap, and almost everything that makes this site friendly at arm's length is wrong at four metres. Whiteboard mode fixes that.

The link

Open smarties.co/play/?board=1 and the mode is on. The choice is remembered, so a bookmark on the classroom laptop only has to be made once. ?board=0 turns it off again, and so does the switch in the Parents Area.

What changes

  • The type is half again larger, on top of whatever text size is already set
  • The layout goes wider and the buttons get bigger, for a finger on a board
  • The visiting animals, the install offer and the did-you-know card go away โ€” thirty children watching one screen do not need a butterfly crossing it
  • Nothing else changes: the same games, the same levels, the same answers

What it costs

Nothing, and there is nothing to sign up for. No account is needed to play, no email address is asked for, and there is no paid version of this site. If a lesson needs the games on paper instead, the worksheets print from the same question generators the games run on.

A game in your own page

Every game also has a frame of its own at /embed/<game>/, which is the game and nothing else โ€” no header, no footer, nothing to consent to. It can go straight into a class blog or a lesson page. The list of every game, with its address, is at /games.json.

Two children at one screen

Head to head puts a question on both halves of the screen with the top half upside down, so two children can sit facing each other across a tablet. On a board it works as a class game with two volunteers.

What it will not do

There are no class accounts, no pupil logins and no teacher dashboard, and none are planned. Nothing a child does here is reported to anybody. That is a deliberate limit rather than a missing feature: a site that needs no account also needs no permission slip.
