What this practises

Finding the number that is missing from a sum, wherever it sits. A child who can do 7 + 5 often stalls on 7 + ? = 12, because the second cannot be answered left to right. It has to be turned round, and that turning round is the beginning of algebra.

How to use it

Read the first few aloud as a question: "seven and how many more makes twelve?". Most children who are stuck are unstuck by hearing it rather than reading it.

What to look for

Expect this to be slower than an ordinary sums sheet, even for a child who is quick at those. That gap is the reason this sheet exists.
