What this practises

Taking a fraction of a quantity, which is what fractions are for and is much easier to grasp than the abstract idea of a number between nought and one.

It also builds the link to division, which is the thing that makes fractions manageable later: a quarter of twelve is twelve divided by four.

How to use it

Let the child draw. Twelve dots in four groups is a legitimate method and it is the method the idea is built on; insisting on the arithmetic too early loses the meaning.

What to look for

Confusion between the two numbers in the fraction. If three quarters keeps coming back as three, the top number is being read as the answer.
