Adding and taking away inside twenty, in both directions. This is the range a child
uses for a whole year, and it is the one worth over-practising: everything after it
assumes these come back without counting.
How to use it
Do not time it. Timed drills are a documented cause of early maths anxiety, and a
sheet that is raced through teaches speed rather than arithmetic. Twenty-four questions
is about ten minutes for a six-year-old who is not being hurried.
Mark it together rather than handing it back marked. The conversation about the two
that were wrong is the part that does the teaching.
What to look for
Where the pauses are, not how many are wrong. Steady on 5 + 3 and slow on 8 + 5 means
the crossing of ten is the thing to work on, and that is a much more useful finding than
a score.
