The 6 Times Table

The 6 table is the 3 table doubled, and only two facts in it are genuinely new.

The whole 6 times table

  1. 6 ร— 1=6
  2. 6 ร— 2=12
  3. 6 ร— 3=18
  4. 6 ร— 4=24
  5. 6 ร— 5=30
  6. 6 ร— 6=36
  7. 6 ร— 7=42
  8. 6 ร— 8=48
  9. 6 ร— 9=54
  10. 6 ร— 10=60

Two routes in

6 ร— 8 is the 3 table doubled: 3 ร— 8 = 24, and 24 doubled is 48. Or it is five sixes and three more sixes: 30, then 36, 42, 48. Both routes are worth showing, because children do not all find the same one easy, and a child with two routes is never stuck.

Most of it is already learned

By the time a child reaches the 6 table they know 6 ร— 1, 6 ร— 2, 6 ร— 5 and 6 ร— 10 from those tables, and 6 ร— 3 and 6 ร— 4 from the 3 and 4 tables. What is actually left is 6 ร— 6, 6 ร— 7, 6 ร— 8 and 6 ร— 9. Four facts, not ten, and telling a child that changes how the week feels.

The one that sticks

6 ร— 7 = 42 is the fact this table is remembered for, and it is worth learning on its own, out of order, before the rest. A fact learned by itself is stronger than the same fact learned eighth in a chant.
